Write about the three most important songs in your life — what do they mean to you? Today’s twist: You’ll commit to a writing practice. I was adamant not to write a new post for this assignment – I swear! I have been writing so much about my favourite music recently that my Facebook friends must have had enough of me by now. ‘Oh, not her again, and not about that band again!’ (Royal Hunt, that it, and their gorgeous front man, DC Cooper). I happened to see them live a couple of months ago, which was a really big thing for me, so hadn’t managed to stop talking about them… until today. When, surprise surprise, you announced the topic of your assignment. 🙂 How ironic! The temptation is far too great – for a new blogger and an old rock fan. After all, music is what I really love writing about, and I am a normal woman, i.e. I am allowed to change my mind as often as I change my clothes!

After some hesitation, here are some of the songs that have had an impact on me. As they say, in no particular order…

1. Message To God by the band mentioned above. This song is the centre of my universe called Royal Hunt, and there is no particular reason for this. No special memory attached, apart from the chills it sent down my spine when I listened to it live in London. I do own all the band’s albums and love all their songs, but this one, for some reason, is my Number One. After having listened to it for millions of times, I always find it difficult to detach from it: I just have to listen to it again, and again. This is the song of my life, and, sorry, I have no idea why. If there is no one else around me, I sing along every bloody time (scream, rather).

2. Nothing Else Matters by Metallica. As much as I love their entire collection, there is just one song that brings back romantic memories for me. I was still dating my now other half. He has never ever been into dancing (as a matter of fact, I get the flack all the time for dancing along my rock music whilst cooking, which I don’t think I do that bad, really). So, I never even tried to persuade him to dance. And, still, there is that one time when we danced together in a rock club. You know what’s coming next (which tune was playing), don’t you…

3. Battery by Metallica. This brings me back to my happy youth, while I was still living with my parents. I have always had a close relationship with my younger brother, and was lucky enough that we shared the same taste for heavy music. One day he decided to learn playing the guitar. No lessons, no formal classes, nothing. He learnt by himself. This is the song he used to practice with most often. I loved it: the melody and the intimate experience. Just the two of us, not doing anything important, chilling out and having a good time. Brother and sister, who eventually will end up living on different continents. Perhaps this is why this memory is so special to me – because he is so far away and I only get to see him now once in a few years.

So, here it is, I did it. I wrote for more than fifteen minutes, so my writing muscles are well stretched (tap on the back). Not too proud of this post, but it did the job, didn’t it… I hope.
